July 20, 2005Canada-US Smuggler's TunnelHere's an interesting news story I've been following: Apparently drug smugglers built a tunnel under the Canada-US border, about an hour's drive from Vancouver. Unfortunately for the smugglers, authorities learned about the tunnel early on. Construction of the tunnel had been monitored over the last eight months and shortly after the passage opened it was shut down by US authorities. Several people were arrested. They showed an aerial view of the Canadian side on the evening news, and I was able to find it on Google's map service. Here's the pic:
That's the Aldergrove-Lynden border crossing on the left side of the picture. The red arrow points to the building over the Canadian side of the tunnel (as reported on the evening news) and the red dot marks what I assume must be the American side. There have been plenty of tunnels across the Mexico-US border over the years, but this is the first I've heard of one across the Canada-US border. There's going to be a press conference Thursday morning, so I'm sure there will be more details released then. News Article: Secret drug tunnel busted on U.S.-Canada border. |
